How to organise your pantry so you actually use what you have

A tidy pantry is not about perfect jars or matching labels. It is about being able to see what you have so you can actually use it. When staples are buried at the back of a shelf, it is easy to forget them, buy doubles, and throw away food that should have been cooked.

This guide focuses on simple steps you can complete in an afternoon. You can do it with pen and paper, but a pantry inventory app like Peeply makes it easier to keep things up to date once you are finished.

1. Empty one shelf at a time

Start small. Instead of pulling your entire pantry apart, empty a single shelf or cupboard door. Check dates as you go and put aside anything that is unsafe to eat so it can be disposed of properly.

2. Group items into broad categories

On your counter or table, group similar items together: grains, tinned food, snacks, baking, breakfast, sauces, and so on. The categories do not need to be perfect. The goal is to notice what you tend to stock and where things are currently hiding.

3. Choose zones that match how you cook

Put everyday ingredients between waist and eye level so you can reach them without thinking. Heavier items, like big bottles or bags of flour, should live lower down. Keep rarely used or seasonal items higher up where they are still visible but not in the way.

4. Label shelves and containers

Labels are less about aesthetics and more about making your system shareable. When shelves and containers are labelled, other people in your household can put things back in the right place and help maintain the order you created.

5. Create a lightweight inventory in Peeply

Once things are in clearer zones, it is the perfect time to capture a quick inventory. With Peeply, you can scan groceries and receipts and shelve items into a simple pantry view. You do not have to track every last spice—start with the staples and the items you often forget about.

6. Check your shelf before you shop

The next time you are planning a grocery run, open your pantry inventory first. A quick glance at your shelf (and Peeply) can prevent duplicate purchases and help you prioritise using what you already have at home.

7. Keep things going with small habits

Organisation sticks when it is tied to routines you already have. Add new items to your shelf when you unpack groceries, and adjust quantities as you cook. A few seconds here and there are easier than a big reorganisation every few months.
